Driving Innovation in Population Health

Kings College of London’s Institute for Population Health was created to better understand and combat disparities, answer challenges, and promote positive health outcomes in urban environments, in the UK and beyond.

Sowen was brought in to drive multiple work streams that helped establish the institute. We conducted a thorough stakeholder analysis and examination of other similar institutions across the globe to identify the unique and specific value of KCL’s environment.

ESTABLISHMENT AND LAUNCH OF THE KCL INSTITUTE FOR POPULATION HEALTH IN 2019

Kings College of London’s Institute for Population Health was created to better understand and combat disparities, answer challenges, and promote positive health outcomes in urban environments, in the UK and beyond. Getting things off the ground required significant buy-in from key stakeholders, investment, and an operative plan.

Relevant partnerships needed to be formed, and  the operative mechanism of data aggregation, analysis and delivery needed to be created. This all needed to be created with careful legal and ethical considerations in mind. To make things even more fun, the project was launched 3 months before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the UK.

Sowen was brought in to drive multiple work streams that helped establish the institute.

1

We conducted a thorough stakeholder analysis and examination of other similar institutions across the globe to identify the unique and specific value of KCL’s environment and launched a business strategy for the establishment of the institution in partnership with King’s Health Partners, London’s largest hospital network.

2

To support the organization’s activities, we created a consortium of population health subject matter experts, from within KCL and outside. This was one of the first initiatives to ever facilitate collaboration across four different academic research institutions in London.

3

In addition, we created a data lake ecosystem that was able to connect clinical data with social, behavioral, geo-spatial, demographic and purchasing data to identify causal relationships that drive poor or positive health outcomes.

4

Finally, Sowen spearheaded the commitment of over £4.8 million from local, federal, EU and private funding sources.

Today, KCL’s Institute for Population Health is a leading institution in the area of integrating real time data to drive impact measurement and optimization of health initiatives and treatments. It focuses specifically on underserved communities in London and beyond, and works in deep partnership with the NHS, King’s Health Partners, and a network of additional partners.
